FEATURES:

The biggest feature of the Viera TXP50S20B is its Freeview HD tuner. This is the first time Panasonic has offered built-in compatibility with the service in one of their sets. HD broadcasts on the service are limited to BBC HD and some of ITV, although Channel 4 should be available soon. The service won’t be available nation-wide until 2012, although some areas received broadcasts as early as 2008. More information on the roll-out, including planned local start dates can be found at http://www.freeview.co.uk/availability/main/indexhd/

The TXP50S20B’s 50″ screen manages an impressive 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Space limits the included audio to a pair of 10 watt speakers, but these manage to accurately produce a wide range of sound. Supported video formats are limited to PAL and DVB-T/T2, the current digital TV broadcast video standard.

The TXP50S20B comes with an older version of Panasonic’s NeoPDP technology, which greatly improves the set’s image quality compared to the company’s previous low end offerings. The largest benefit of NeoPDP is decreased power consumption, with average use clocking in at a near-LCD 201 watts.

Side-mounted ports are limited to on composite video, one composite audio, and one HDMI, with the rest of the plugs accessible only if the set is stand mounted. The back holds an two more HDMI ports as well as plugs for SCART, optical video out, and RCA video and audio inputs. Unlike most new TVs, Internet broadcasts aren’t supported, but there is an SD memory card slot to view video and picture files including AVCHD, SD-VIDEO, and JPEG formats. Panasonic has opted for a textured bezel, preventing fingerprint smears common on gloss black devices.

The Panasonic TX-P50S20 has a claimed refresh rate of 600Hz, although this isn’t true frame-by-frame refresh. Panasonic’s Intelligent Frame Creation refreshes only parts of the screen displaying motion between actual frame refreshes. With PAL broadcasts at 50Hz (frames per second,) the Panasonic TX-P50S20B can redraw parts of each frame ten times, and the entire frame twice for a total of 600Hz. The refresh rate can be slowed to 24Hz to match movie recordings, but it doesn’t look as good as the 600Hz rendering. Each redraw takes 0.001ms, nearly two hundred times faster than even the best LCD screen.

The Resolution Enhancer doesn’t scale up standard definition broadcasts as dramatically as other TVs, but it also doesn’t have the visual noise problems inherent in competitors’ designs. However, standard definition broadcast colours are noticeably washed out, especially compared to the set’s HD rendering.

The low power consumption makes the TXP50S20B a serious contender for those looking at low-end LCD sets as well as plasma TVs. HD video quality is excellent for this price range, and the Freeview HD tuner will let you enjoy HD without satellite service. However, if you still have to wait a couple years for Freeview to come to your area or you want to watch Internet videos, the TXP50S20B probably isn’t for you.
